Retirement Plan Assets

Your retirement plan assets can be one of the most tax-wise ways to support University of the Cumberlands. Here’s why:

  • Money in an IRA, 401(k), 403(b), or tax-sheltered annuity has not yet been taxed.

  • When left to loved ones, they pay federal income taxes on distributions, reducing what they ultimately receive.

  • When left to a nonprofit like Cumberlands, the entire amount passes tax-free to support our mission.

This simple shift allows you to provide for your loved ones with less heavily taxed assets while using retirement funds to make a lasting impact at Cumberlands.

Ways to Give Through Your Retirement Plan

1. Name Us as a Beneficiary

  • Update your beneficiary designation form through your plan administrator.

  • Name University of the Cumberlands as your primary or contingent beneficiary for all or a portion of your plan.

2. Fund a Charitable Gift Annuity

  • If you are 70½ or older, you can make a one-time election of up to $54,000 from your IRA to create a life-income gift—without being taxed.

  • You (and your spouse, if desired) receive stable lifetime income; the remainder supports Cumberlands after your lifetime.

3. Use the IRA Charitable Rollover

  • Give up to $108,000 per year directly from your IRA to Cumberlands, tax-free.

  • This counts toward your required minimum distribution without increasing taxable income.

4. Fund a Testamentary Charitable Remainder Trust

  • Your retirement plan assets fund the trust after your lifetime.

  • The trust pays income to loved ones for life or up to 20 years; remaining assets then support the University.

5. Designate a Donor-Advised Fund

  • Retirement assets passing to heirs are taxed as ordinary income.

  • Direct them to your donor-advised fund instead, where they transfer tax-free for future charitable giving.
