Powers Family

A Powerful Family Legacy

University of the Cumberlands

Background

Roger Powers (’80) and Jonathan Powers (’84), both licensed pharmacists and owners of Maiden Drug Company, established a scholarship fund in 2005 to honor their alma mater. The fund was renamed the Deborah Carol Childress Memorial Scholarship Fund in 2007 to commemorate their niece, Deborah Carol Childress, who tragically lost her life in an automobile accident. The scholarship awards two annual scholarships of $1,000 each to deserving high school graduates from Williamsburg Independent and Whitley County High School, who intend to enroll at the University of the Cumberlands and major in education.

Family Legacy

The Powers family has a strong connection with the University of the Cumberlands. All the children of Pairon and Joyce Powers attended the university, as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family remains actively involved in the university community, often seen on campus at various events.
