Background
J.C. Harville, a 1979 graduate, was the first in his family to attend college. He enrolled at the University of the Cumberlands in 1976, becoming actively involved in campus life, including the Baptist Student Union and working part-time in the campus minister’s office.
Personal Tragedy
In December 1976, during his first year, Harville received the sudden and tragic news of his mother’s death. This event left him without tuition funds, employment, or a place to go home to.
Support from the University
President James Boswell visited Harville in his dorm room to offer prayers and assured him that he would be able to finish his college education. The university provided him with opportunities to work during the summers and awarded scholarships, enabling him to graduate in May 1979.
Legacy and Giving Back
Harville attributes his successful career as a teacher, district office staff member, and principal to the support he received from the university. He has committed to a legacy gift to continue supporting students facing challenges similar to those he experienced.
