Background
Pearl Brown Forth, a 1938 alumna, made a significant impact on the university and the Appalachian region through her dedication to education. In 1936, at the age of 16, Pearl left her family’s farm in Jackson County, Kentucky, to attend Cumberland College Academy (the predecessor to the University of the Cumberlands). Her mother made the decision to send her there, recognizing the institution’s commitment to preparing teachers to shape the face of Appalachia.
University Experience
During her time at Cumberland, Pearl was influenced by Dr. James Boswell, a respected educator and long-serving president of the college. His strong character and academic integrity left a lasting impression on her. After completing her studies at Cumberland, Pearl earned a teaching certificate in English and history from the University of Michigan. It was there that she met her husband, William “Stuart” Forth.
Legacy
Pearl’s commitment to education extended beyond her own career. She inspired her parents to pursue higher education; her mother became a teacher, and her father used his education to become a lawyer and eventually a Circuit Court judge. Pearl’s legacy continues through the Dr. Stuart Forth Scholarship Fund, established in her memory, which supports students pursuing education at the University of the Cumberlands.
