Beneficiary Designations
Not everyone wants to include a gift in their Will or estate plan—and that’s okay. Many people prefer the simplicity and flexibility of naming University of the Cumberlands as a beneficiary on assets they already own, such as:
IRAs and retirement plans
Life insurance policies
Donor-advised funds
Commercial annuities
This approach lets you keep full control of your assets during your lifetime while ensuring your legacy supports the next generation of students.
Just Three Easy Steps
Request a form: Contact your retirement plan administrator, insurance company, bank, or donor-advised fund provider—or download the beneficiary designation form from their website.
Choose your gift amount: Decide what percentage (from 1% to 100%) you want University of the Cumberlands to receive. List us as a beneficiary along with your chosen percentage.
Submit the form: Return the completed form to your provider, and your gift is in place—no attorney required.
This simple option makes it easy to adjust your plans anytime, giving you peace of mind and maximum flexibility.
An Example of How It Works

Robert and Carol treasure the financial help they’ve been able to give their children and Cumberlands over the years. The couple recently updated their Will to leave stocks and real estate to their kids. They left Cumberlands a $75,000 IRA to be transferred following their lifetime. Because Cumberlands is tax-exempt, all $75,000 will help support our mission.
If Robert and Carol had left the IRA to their children, approximately $18,000* would have gone to pay federal income taxes—leaving only $57,000 for their family’s use. Robert and Carol are happy knowing they are making the most of their hard-earned money thanks to their updated estate plan.
